Active listening comes before advice

When someone shares a problem, your mind may jump to a solution. Ask first whether they want to be heard or want ideas. That small question can prevent a larger misunderstanding.

Make room for the thought

Let the speaker finish. Attend to their meaning rather than preparing your next sentence. You might briefly reflect back: “The deadline changed suddenly, and that disrupted your plan.” Then ask, “Have I understood?”

Understanding is not agreement

You can understand someone’s perspective and still disagree. Active listening does not require accepting every request. It helps you respond to what was actually said. To express a boundary or request, continue with communication skills.

Try it today

Choose a short conversation and hold back advice for its first minute. Ask one open question, then summarise what you heard. Read the listening without solving practice for a concrete exercise and note what differed from your usual habit.
