Before any reply, summarize your speaker's argument and verify with them you got it before disagreeing.
Goal
Prevent unproductive arguing from "replying to what they did not say", and turn the talk from adversarial to a shared problem.

After they finish their argument, say: "Before I reply, let me make sure I got it. You are saying that..."
