Silence as a Coaching Tool
After every powerful question you ask, count a full 7 seconds of silence before speaking again — the deepest answers come after silence, not before it.
Goal
Train yourself to tolerate silence after asking a coaching question, instead of automatically sliding into filling the void with an extra question or clarification that interrupts the person's deep thinking.
Steps
-
1
In your next session, ask one open question, then physically close your mouth and start counting 7 seconds in your head without any words.

Founders: John Whitmore · Nancy Kline (1999)
Nancy Kline documented in "Time to Think" (1999) that the average listener waits under 3 seconds before interrupting, and extending silence to 7-10 seconds notably raises the quality of extracted thoughts.
