Distinguishing Technical vs. Adaptive Challenges
Before solving any problem, ask: do we need an expert with a ready answer (technical), or do the people themselves need to change (adaptive)?
Goal
Avoid the most dangerous leadership error per Heifetz's theory: treating an adaptive challenge (requiring change in people's values or behavior) with a technical fix (a procedure or ready expertise), which worsens the problem instead of solving it.
